Anxiety Treatment

Did you know that Anxiety Disorders are the most the common area of mental health challenges that affect the general population (Kessler et al. 2005). Especially now during COVID, mental health symptoms are being exacerbated. Children often feel the effects of anxiety through challenges related to academic performance, peer relations, and family functioning (Swan & Kendall, 2016). When these symptoms are not addressed appropriately, they generally continue in to adulthood and can result in development of other psychiatric conditions, chronic physical comorbidities, poor health outcomes, and suicidality (Conway et al., 2006; Kessler, Chiu et al., 2005; Roy-Byrne et al., 2008; Wolk et al.,2015).

The CALM (Coaching Approach Behavior and Leading by Modeling) Program for Early Childhood Anxiety is a family-based behavior therapy program that is aimed at treating anxiety in children ages 2 to 8 years old. This treatment has been widely studied and is aimed at helping children struggling with separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, and/or specific phobias. It has received strong support in clinical trials and can be done in person or via telehealth (the iCALM Telehealth Program, Comer et al., 2020, Cooper-Vince et al.,2016).
